Thai Lotto (or Thai lottery) is an immensely popular form of gambling in Thailand, with prize amounts often reaching into six figures. Although several countries have banned this type of lottery play, many still indulge in illegal play illegally. Though popular, Thai lotto should not be seen as an easy path to riches as over time it will almost always result in financial loss.
Lotto tickets can be found for sale in most supermarkets and convenience stores across Thailand. In addition, street vendors selling official briefcases also sell them; ticket stands located outside popular shops such as Big C and Tesco Lotus also stock lottery tickets. There are two varieties of Thai lotto: government lottery tickets (TGL) and Thai charity lottery tickets (TCL). Winners can select either option depending on their preferences and desired winning amount; with TCL offering maximum first prize awards of three million baht at 0.5% taxation while TGL offers two million at 0.5% taxation; while TGL offers first prize awards with first prize starting at two million baht taxed at 0.5% tax.
While Thai Lotto tickets may be purchased online, most often they’re purchased in person. As it’s one of two forms of legalized gambling in Thailand, to participate you must be aged at least 20 and a citizen of that country; drawings take place every first and sixteenth day of each month.
To collect your winnings, visit the GLO office with your passport or Thai ID card and a signed copy of your winning lottery ticket. Furthermore, stamp duty of 0.5% for government lottery winnings and 1% for charitable lottery winnings must also be paid; in most cases this stamp duty will be collected directly by the government lottery office from vendors selling tickets to winners; however in some instances this might come directly from winners themselves.
Others take a more mystical approach when selecting their lottery numbers, using numerology and birthdates as indicators, while others choose numbers based on dreams or supernatural messages disguised as ordinary events. One such popular selection are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, often seen as representing fire, water, earth and sky as well as wisdom, compassion generosity and humility – though other approaches include messages from beyond through dreams or random events that occur in everyday life.
