What is the Thai Lotto?

thai lotto (Thai: slaakkinaebng; RTGS: salak kin baeng) is Thailand’s official national lottery, run by the Government Lottery Office (GLO). Almost all other forms of gambling are banned in Thailand, with the exception of the bi-monthly Thai lottery. In 2014, approximately 67 million people played the Government lottery, spending more than 76 billion baht.

The lottery is a state-run enterprise, with strict laws that govern how the games are conducted and what percentage of profits go towards supporting national causes. The GLO prints the tickets and sells them to national wholesalers, known as brokers, who then distribute them to more than 14,700 retail vendors across the country. The system is designed to eliminate fraud, as it is nearly impossible for someone to counterfeit a ticket. The tickets are printed on yellow, thin paper and feature a two-tone watermark of a mythical bird called Wayupak that is visible under ultraviolet light and cannot be copied by scanning the paper with an ordinary scanner. They also have a special chemical coating that will reveal any stains or marks on the paper when drops of bleach are placed on it.

In addition to the pre-printed number, each lottery ticket has a barcode that is scanned by machines at the cashier counters of the retailers. This information is recorded on a computer database, and the winners are notified of their winnings by phone or email. The lottery is a popular form of entertainment in Thailand, and the prizes are usually quite generous.

While the odds of winning are much lower than in Europe or America, a single ticket can still win you a substantial amount of money. In addition to the main prize, there are three smaller prize categories for each game: a 2nd prize, a 3rd prize, and a 4th prize.
