The Laos lottery, formally known as the “state lottery,” is run by the Ministry of Finance under the prime minister’s supervision. But there are many illegal lottery operators in the country, including informal football lotteries and lottery chances sold through short messaging services. In order to prevent such operators, on Aug. 17, the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive to the ministry to reduce state lottery drawing times from two to one each week, and to take measures to improve transparency. The directive also instructed the ministry to crack down on illegal lottery operators, and a list of prohibited activities was provided.
