A lottery is a game in which players purchase tickets, pinning their hopes on a sequence of numbers. If their selection matches the winning numbers, they win a prize. The lottery is a source of revenue for organizers, a source of entertainment for participants, and a potential economic stimulus if winners invest their windfall back into the community. In addition, the promise of a life-changing fortune unites people in a shared dream and fuels optimism.

The official national lottery (Thai: slaakkinaebng, RTGS: salak kin baeng) is one of two forms of legalized gambling in Thailand; the other being horse racing in Bangkok. It is held twice a month, on the first and 16th of each month. It is administered by the Government Lottery Office (GLO).

Ticket pairs cost 80 baht each, and are sold in advance of the draw. The ticket includes a number of anti-counterfeiting features. A guest named the “Draw Chairman” then randomly selects a colored ball to initialize each of the machine’s draws. Depending on the color of the ball, it determines the order of lesser prizes: yellow for second prize, pink for third prize, green for fourth prize, and blue for fifth prize.

The first prize, if all six digits are correct, is B30 million. Previously, GLO offered a bonus prize for matching five of the last six digits; this was eliminated by the military government after 1 August 2015. Matching four of the final six digits will win a B40,000 prize.
