The first recorded evidence of a lottery is a keno slip from the Chinese Han dynasty (205–187 BC). The term “lottery” comes from the Dutch noun “lot” (fate) and it was first used in English around 1726. The Dutch state-owned Staatsloterij is the oldest running lottery still in operation today. The first recorded lotteries to sell tickets with cash prizes were held in the Low Countries in the 15th century to raise money for town fortifications and help the poor. Benjamin Franklin organized a lottery in Philadelphia to raise money for cannons during the American Revolutionary War, and George Washington participated in a lottery to fund his expedition into the mountains. Tickets from these early lotteries became collector items.
In India, the Kerala State Lottery began operating in 1967. It inspired other states to start their own lotteries. In the current year, there are ten state-run lotteries in India. Each lotteries offers different prize categories, with the largest prize being Rs 100 million. The winning combination of numbers must match the five main numbers and one bonus number to win.
