Laos officials have brushed off such allegations, saying that there is no evidence of rigging or manipulation in the lottery’s operations. In addition, they have announced that they will reduce the frequency of state lottery drawings to one a week and that informal football lotteries and lottery chances sold through short messaging services will be shut down.
Some believe that the government is not putting enough pressure on the companies behind the lottery to maintain transparency and avoid corruption. They say that business interests with connections to the ruling elite are behind many of the lottery’s operations and have been lobbying for control over the lottery.
Nevertheless, the government remains committed to its policy of limiting gambling and is working with the private sector to develop a legal framework for the industry. In the meantime, it is crucial that people enjoy the lottery with a sense of responsibility, mindful that it is a form of gambling where the scales of luck can tip either way.
