Lottery is an important part of life in Thailand, both as a revenue generator for organizers and as a source of entertainment for players. It is also a social catalyst, fostering a sense of hope and optimism through the promise of sudden wealth. But perhaps its greatest contribution is that of shifting consumer behavior, as winners dream about how they might spend their windfalls and the anticipation of winning drives purchasing decisions.

The official Thai lottery, known locally as slaak kin baeng, is administered by the government’s Lottery Office (GLO) and draws every first and 16th of the month. It is one of only two forms of legal gambling in the Land of Smiles, and is played by nearly 19 million natives; a staggering 28.6% of the country’s population.

During the draw, a GLO official called the “Draw Chairman” selects a colored ball to determine the order of lesser prize draws. The balls are numbered from left to right, yellow for 2nd prize, pink for 3rd prize, green for 4th prize, and blue for 5th prize. After each draw, the Draw Chairman removes the balls from the machines and announces the winner.

All tickets sold in Thailand are pre-printed with a variety of anti-counterfeiting features and can only be purchased as ticket pairs. In addition, they contain information regarding the schedule of prizes, ancillary information, and terms and conditions.
