The results are in: the winner of the $55 million jackpot is Xia Rattanakone, who grew up in an orphanage in Laos and was adopted by an American family. She and her husband plan to use some of their winnings to search for her birth parents. Several other Laotians who have won the lottery in recent years also plan to return home to help relatives in their villages. Lao deputy finance minister and state lottery supervisor Sila Viengkeo told RFA’s Lao Service that he will take steps to crack down on illegal lottery games, including informal football lotteries and lottery chances sold through short messaging services. He also will reduce the frequency of state lottery drawings and improve transparency of prize payouts.
