While the state lottery is regulated and operated legally, there are still concerns about illegal gambling activities taking place. For example, a number of informal football lottery opportunities that are sold through mobile phone messaging services have been surfacing. This is not surprising, given the astronomical payouts and lure of winning the lottery. On August 17, the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive to the ministry that oversees the state lottery, requesting that drawings be reduced from two to one a week and that winnings be handled more transparently.
Nevertheless, the popularity of the lottery has also led to an influx of unauthorized businesses that offer unregulated prizes. The proliferation of illegal betting sites and services is a concern for some, and the government has taken steps to address this issue. On October 30, the Ministry of Finance announced that it would work with telecommunications providers to stop illegal lotteries.
While the lottery offers an exciting avenue for potential financial gains, it is crucial to remember that it is a form of gambling and that the scales of luck can tip either way.
