The Lao government has taken steps to curb lottery activities. On Aug. 17, Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive to the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the legal state lottery system, to work with the ministry of public security to improve oversight and transparency. The government will cut the number of lottery drawings to one a week, and will close down informal football lotteries and state lottery chances sold through short messaging services. Lao deputy finance minister Sila Viengkeo told RFA’s Lao Service that the provisions of the directive will be strictly enforced, though he said a date for implementation has not yet been set. Accusations that the state lottery system lacks transparency have been unfounded, he added.
